John Mueller from Google has warned against altering your URLs just for SEO purposes.
He basically argued that, in most circumstances, altering URLs will hurt SEO and that you definitely shouldn't do it for that reason alone.
Over the course of a 24-hour period, this was discussed on two distinct websites, Reddit and Twitter.
If you're an SEO and bill by the hour to apply this modification, it'll benefit your business line, John said on Reddit.
Does it benefit the site? Almost never (unless they have horrible URLs that you can't even copy and paste, perhaps).
Will a modification have a negative impact on the site until it is reprocessed? Probably
When URLs changed, John tweeted, "You should implement redirects per page."
